Arch Linux + Kdevelop + Irrlicht 3D + Blender
If you’re into any type of 3D development in Linux be sure to give Arch a try with your 3D tools. The i686 compiled binaries offered up by Arch Linux gave me a little more of an edge, especially when it came to developing models in Blender and running them in the Irrlicht 3D engine. The performance is actually fairly amazing when compared to Windows XP, Windows 7 and even Ubuntu.
The Irrlicht 3D Engine is a super fast, high performance open source 3D engine. The software was developed in C++ and comes with some .NET bindings (although unstable). What attracted me to Irrlicht was the fact that it compiled from source with out a hitch and it was fairly easy to get started. I played with Microsoft’s XNA (3D game development using DirectX) tools and I actually hard more difficulty understanding their API than Irrlicht’s. With just a few lines of code in Irrlicht you can display and even animate a 3D model. Check out their Tutorials only to get an idea of what the code looks like.
Blender seemed to have gotten a speed boost as well. I can render the same models in Arch Linux and also notice an improved performance. I mainly notice how much quicker Blender starts. It’s really strange how Arch opens application quicker and how much you notice it!

Kdevelop was another application that I noticed was much quicker. Under Ubuntu I could barley use KDE as it was but now I can use KDE and the KDevelopment system and I have no lag issues at all. I’m really starting to wonder what the Ubuntu team is adding to their distribution to make it such a hog.

Interesting. I’m using kubuntu and it does always feel like a total waste not having it compiled for 686 arch’s. I do wish they’d compile an i686 branch. Definitely going to look into arch i think on my next wipe&clean.
Most people try Arch because they think they’re being clever. All this stuff about Arch being difficult to install is just rubbish, it’s time consuming, not difficult. And after all that setting up you’ve got a system that’s no better than Ubuntu that installs in less than half an hour. I actually found Ubuntu 9.04 to boot and run quicker than Arch + Xfce4.
One other thing, about the Arch forums…it’s a boring place….lots of people slapping themselves on the back and thinking that they’re clever because they’re using a system that needs constant repairing thanks to ‘pacman -Syu’.
Arch is for people with more time than sense.
Arch fanboys are worse than mac fanboys. Not only do they think that everything else is wrong and bad, but they try to convert everyone to their cause.
Ok, I just gave Arch Linux much more time even though I put some bad things about it above.
It has been stable and fast and I like it… no wonder it has so many fanboys
I have to admit it’s real good though.
Yeah man. I was the same way but once I really started using it I realized how clean and fast it really was.
So far so good on my main production laptop at work. No issues at all.
@Archer ….
1) archlinux doesn’t have fanboys, it’s difficult to install from average user point of view so most of the trolls and idiots stay away from arch
2) arch have one of the best community and forum and wiki (why? look at point 1)
3) yes, it’s not for everyone and will never be, is esoteric and designed for people who knows some things or want to learn
4) stability is user related problem, if you know what you’re doing you will be just fine, it’s funny because a lot of people stays on fedora where half of things doesn’t work thanks to fedora’s “bleeding edge” character, arch is always up to date but it’s really careful when it comes to critical packages
